The technical process used in the creation of
Doozvillnavava is very similar to
Urban Paradise. I discovered the sea lions at Pier 39, San Francisco, during a late night bicycle ride immediately after having been given an MP3 disc containing several hours of Pygmy music. I was so impressed with the bizarre sounds of the sea lions that I returned a couple weeks later with my Walkman and recorded the basis for
Doozvillnavava. Having been introduced to sea lions and Pygmies at the same time they seemed connected in some way and I decided to create a pallet of sounds derived exclusively from the Pygmy music and combine it with the field recording of the sea lions. As with
Urban Paradise only the most minimal processing was used on the field recording of the sea lions–no looping or effects were used–while I imposed no limits on the manipulation of the Pygmy samples; some phrases are looped and manually faded in and out during the course of the recording while other sounds and phrases are randomly triggered with LFO's.
